Colombian Women Producers Share Challenges, Achievements, Future Plans At IWCA Encounter
In August 2022, the inaugural IWCA Encounter Colombia event brought together a wide range of stakeholders to discuss gender equity, sustainability, and the rich culture of the Colombian coffee industry. More than 420 women producers representing the diverse growing regions of the country participated and provided updates on activities and programs made possible by strategic relationships with local governments and professional organizations.
The interactive event centered around three primary activities:
Coffee cupping sessions provided opportunities for producers and buyers connect in-person.
Panel discussions with government and industry leaders addressing critical industry challenges.
Farm tours where attendees tasted locally produced coffees and learned more about the programs that provide support for women producers.
IWCA Encounter provided unique opportunities to engage with diverse groups of coffee professionals and gain a deeper understanding of the country’s commitment to women working in the coffee supply chain. Along with representatives from IWCA Honduras, Guatemala, Portugal, and Venezuela, the event featured remarks from current SCA Board President, Juan Luis Barrios, Roberto Vélez, General Manager of the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia, First Lady of the Department of Quindío, Ana Maria Donneys, and IWCA Colombia Chapter President, Lina Maria Granados.
Continuing to encourage the participation of women in high-profile industry events like IWCA Encounter will facilitate strong professional relationships and enhance visibility and growth for women in the international coffee community.
